Transfer Technicians employed at Boston Energy since 2012.

Take the leap to wind energy

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) highlights a significant workforce challenge: “the global wind industry will require nearly 600,000 technicians over the next five years. To keep pace with this growth, 43% of them will need to be new to the industry, joining from an education and recruitment pipeline”.

Our Transfer to Wind programme supports those looking at joining the industry from various pathways including armed forces, transferrable skills and encouraging women to take the leap into the industry. Through strategic customer partnerships and comprehensive training, we provide them with the skills and opportunities to get their foot in the door and start their journey in wind. This investment in people not only empowers individuals to achieve their career aspirations but also helps our clients meet the growing demand for skilled technicians, ensuring the industry has the talent needed to thrive in a rapidly expanding market.

Armed Forces/Veterans

Accredited by the Armed Forces Covenant, Boston Energy is committed to helping service leavers embark on new careers in renewable energy. Leveraging your transferable skills in engineering and mechanics, you can seamlessly transition to working on wind turbines, building on the expertise you developed in the Armed Forces.

Transferrable skills

We recognise the immense value of transferable skills, particularly in engineering and related fields, and we actively support individuals with these backgrounds in transitioning into the wind industry. By leveraging existing expertise, we help these individuals quickly adapt to the industry’s unique demands, enabling them to build rewarding careers while supporting the sector’s rapid growth.

Women into Wind

Currently, women make up just 21% of the wind sector. Our Women Into Wind initiative aims to empower women to pursue careers in wind energy. Offering hands-on training, mentorship, career development, and opportunities we aim to help women thrive and lead in this growing field.

Transitioning from the forces

If you are from a mechanical and electrical background, used to working in servicing equipment such as vehicles and weapons, garages, you are able to transfer those skills into becoming a WTT.

Your experience from the Royal Air Force, servicing of aircraft as well as machinery and electrical components, working in a safe manner, and working a height are all transferrable skills in the wind industry.

Transferrable skills from the Royal Marines can include engineering, hydraulic electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.

Troubleshooter @ Boston Energy

Meet Pip

“As my time in the Military was drawing to an end, I always had a passion to get into the wind industry. With this, I took myself to LinkedIn. Time and time again one company was highly recommended above many others, and that company was Boston Energy. Boston Energy is not only passionate about giving ex-service leavers a chance to get into the wind industry, they area also dedicated to providing all of their wind technicians the opportunity to progress.”

Since joining Boston Energy as a Basic Technician in 2022, we have supported Pip throughout the development of his career, and now congratulate him on his new role as Troubleshooter as part of our onshore operations in Scotland!

Transfer Technician @ Boston Energy

Meet Tidur

“I am pleased to share my experience transitioning from the military to the wind industry, particularly with Boston Energy. As a former member of the Infantry, I have always been driven by a sense of purpose and a desire to contribute to a greater cause. When I discovered the potential of the wind industry to make a positive impact on the environment

My journey from the military to the wind industry with Boston Energy has been incredibly fulfilling. I am grateful for the opportunities Boston Energy has put me forward for and I’m delighted to have recently been successful in gaining a position here. I’m both proud and excited to begin working in an industry that aligns with my values and allows me to make a positive impact. Boston Energy’s commitment to excellence and their investment in their employees has made this transition not only possible but also truly rewarding.”

Women into Wind Scheme

Meet Rebecca

Rebecca joined us through our Women into Wind Scheme in 2023, and has since hit the ground running and progressed into a Competent Technician role at LID offshore windfarm.

“I’m quite a driven person and so I’d set myself a 10-year plan to achieve my goals, and when I finally got my GWO’s and was lucky enough to go to Denmark to do my SGTT training through Boston Energy, I knew I was finally getting the ball rolling to be exactly where I wanted to be.

The staff were wonderful, continuously keeping me updated and working hard to help me find that step into the industry.”

Success Stories

Meet Colby, former British Army

Transitioning to the industry with Boston Energy was super easy. I had an interview on a Monday, got the job on a Tuesday, ready in time for leaving the military on Friday.

I have been working with Boston Energy on London Array since joining 6 years ago. After completing my initial training, I went on to become a Competent Technician for four years and then in 2022 I became a level 5 mechanical technician, leading service teams.

My advice would be don’t be scared about leaving the military. This industry is forever growing and if Boston Energy do one thing, it is their loyalty to ex-service leavers. I had lots of great support from everyone and they made me feel so at ease.

I’m now looking forward to getting my Level 6 qualifications and becoming a qualified troubleshooter!
