A week of work experience: Find out what Maya got up to during her week with Boston Energy!

<

We had a fantastic week with Maya who came to us in the Marketing Department for her work experience to learn more about graphic design and social media content creation. Throughout the week Maya did some fantastic work on several social media posts and honed her design and photography skills, and even got the chance to speak to other members of the team to find out more about the possible career paths available to her in the wind industry. Firstly tell us a bit about yourself! What kind of career do you want to go in (if you have thought about that yet!)

Initially, I decided to go to the Marketing department for work experience at Boston Energy because of the subjects I enjoy at school, which were business and media, where a lot of the things I learnt related to marketing jobs. I had heard about the company from my mom and the work they do interested me, too. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the tasks I had been set but I also had the opportunity to learn about other jobs that were available, and after speaking with Rob (the head of Technical Projects & New Ventures), learnt that the path of Engineering is also one I could be interested in.

How has your week with the marketing team gone? What have you got up to in your time here?

It was great. I worked with Megan, who is the Marketing Coordinator here at Boston Energy, who not only made my week here much more enjoyable and supported me with every task I was set, but also expanded my knowledge on marketing and taught me a lot about the work that she does. During my week, I used multiple programs to create social media content. These included Photoshop and InDesign for graphics/pictures, and Adobe Premiere Pro for videos.

I had the chance to write blogs and take pictures with their camera of many different things, including one of the Operations team. I also had a meeting with Robert Mitchinson, which I mentioned before, about his career past as a technician. We spoke about how he got to the position he is at and about the career options there are for Engineering. I learnt that there are many different options, all with distinct types of jobs/work, some of which piqued my interest.

How has your week with us supported where you want to go in the future?

It’s been great. Although I wanted to, I have never worked with Premiere Pro before, since I didn’t really have the chance. During my time here, after practicing a little and learning about some of the features/tools, I created a short video promoting a position for Wind Technicians. I also think I really developed my skills on InDesign. I had only used it briefly at school but learnt a lot while creating the social media graphics for Boston. I think this week has supported what I choose to do in the future regarding career options as I got to experience what work people in marketing departments do, which my knowledge on was very limited before, and also learnt about other jobs that I hadn’t even considered before which now, I believe, could very possibly be the path that I decide to take.

Most importantly; Have you enjoyed yourself? What parts did you like? Where there any challenges and if so, how did you overcome them?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Boston Energy. I have developed so many useful skills, and all of the work I was set I found to be very interesting. I especially liked the graphics I made, because they were fun to create, and the promotional video I did on Premiere Pro as it was new to me, and I learnt a lot in the process. There were some challenges I had to overcome, since a lot of the work I was doing was new and I had to slightly push myself out of my comfort zone to create it as I wanted it to be as good as possible. However, I think the biggest challenge for me was more emotional rather than physical. On the morning and for a few days prior, I had lots of anxiety about my work experience because I had no idea what it would be like, who I would have to speak to, and I strongly doubted myself. Nevertheless, my negative thoughts were proved wrong, and I had not only a great first day but an amazing week. I am very grateful for the opportunities and experiences I was given at Boston, and for the people that made an effort to make my time here pleasant and benefitable.

So there you have it! We are so pleased that Maya enjoyed her week with us just as much as we enjoyed having her with us 🙂 If you would like to know more about work experience at Boston Energy, please contact the office to find out more!
