The Wind Industry in Taiwan & Boston Energy

<

Taiwan, known for its stunning landscapes and technological advancements, has emerged as a key player in the global wind energy sector. With its favourable geographical location and commitment to renewable energy, Taiwan has rapidly developed a thriving wind industry.

So how has Taiwan had such a remarkable growth? In this blog, we will delve into Taiwan’s wind industry, its advantages, achievements, and Boston Energy’s dedication to support the promising future that lies ahead.

Geographical Advantage: Nestled between the East China Sea and the Philippine Sea, Taiwan boasts exceptional wind resources. The island’s geography, characterized by high mountains and a long coastline, creates ideal conditions for harnessing wind power. The consistent and strong winds blowing across Taiwan’s western coasts have attracted significant investments in offshore wind farms, making it an attractive destination for wind energy development.

Offshore Wind Power Projects: Taiwan has become a global leader in offshore wind energy, attracting major international players and investments. Its ambitious offshore wind development plans aim to reach a capacity of 5.7 GW by 2025 and 10 GW by 2035. The Formosa Projects, led by Ørsted and joint ventures with local partners, are among the largest offshore wind farms in Asia. These projects not only provide clean energy but also contribute to job creation, local economic growth, and the development of a domestic supply chain.Over the last few years, Boston Energy has supported key players in the Taiwanese wind industry with services such as Offshore Service & Maintenance, Construction & Commissioning, Pre-Assembly and Heavy Lift (MCE).

Onshore Wind Power Expansion: While offshore wind takes centre stage, onshore wind power also plays a significant role in Taiwan’s energy transition. The government encourages the development of onshore wind farms in areas with favourable wind resources. These projects contribute to the decentralization of energy production, reducing transmission losses and increasing energy security. Moreover, onshore wind farms create opportunities for community engagement and local participation, fostering a sense of ownership and support for renewable energy initiatives as well as generating numerous job opportunities and career progression for local technicians.

Technological Innovations and Collaboration: Taiwan’s wind industry thrives on innovation and collaboration between local and international partners. The country has invested in research and development, focusing on improving wind turbine technology, grid integration, and energy storage solutions. Collaborations with foreign companies and knowledge exchange have enabled Taiwan to leverage international expertise, accelerate its learning curve, and build a competitive advantage in the wind industry. Throughout this tremendous growth, sourcing local talent remains at the forefront of our commitment to supporting the development of the Taiwanese wind energy industry.

During a recent trip to MTIC Kaohsiung, Head of Operations Marc Dawson and the team were invited to present to number of students who were looking to transition into the wind industry. “Following this presentation, many these students completed the New Talent Training Program (covering GWO training, introduction to wind, site visits) which enabled them to apply and secure work with our customers locally in Taiwan. Developing the local capability is our key strategy and 50% of our workforce in Taiwan have been resourced locally.”

“Our team have developed local relationships with key training providers in Taiwan to ensure the latest cohort of local Taiwanese technicians have a pathway into the wind industry with our customers.”

Head of Construction & Commissioning, Neil Harvey added, “As part of our ongoing investment and team development in Taiwan, we have been deploying experienced mechanical/electrical/hydraulic technicians from our UK/EU teams as Team Leads and mentors to our local technicians. This commitment further supports our customers projects and the rapid upskilling of our local technician teams, so they become team leaders in their own right. This process only helps drive down overall costs, it gives local people the chance to and build their careers in a thriving industry.”
