Upskilling and New Entrant Recruitment @ Boston Energy

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) states that wind energy generation increased by a record 265 Twh (up 14%) in 2022. To meet the goals of a 100% carbon-free electric grid by 2035, the wind energy workforce must keep pace with industry growth.

At Boston Energy, we are committed to supplying highly skilled and qualified wind technicians at pace to support the demands of the industry.

Margo Jagiello, the Head of Technicians Development and Retention, said, “At Boston Energy we take an active part in closing the workforce gap in the wind Industry by actively implementing programs that allow applicants from outside of the industry to plan their future within the Green Energy Sector.

Our most successful initiatives that we have worked on over the last 10 years have been the New Entrants Recruitment Scheme, which enables us to help Armed Forces Leavers transition from the military into a career in wind. Colby, Pip and Rob are just a few members of our team who joined us through our new entrant recruitment scheme and have excelled in their new roles – find out more about their journeys on our website!

As well as this, we actively assist all our technicians in growing their experience, enhancing their skillset and ultimately giving them the opportunity to progress from New Entrant Level all the way up to Troubleshooter level.

Margo, along with the rest of the team will work with Technician workforce to identify career paths for technicians working with Boston Energy that are ready for progression and help them reach their personal career aspirations and get the most out of their opportunities with us.

We aim to work with every technician individually in establishing and identifying their desired career path. Our goal is to make sure every technician that joins us understands the opportunities that will be available to them as they develop and gain experience, including the start-to-end career path that we have developed at Boston Energy.

The career paths available to Boston Energy technicians who progress in their career are as follows:

In terms of upskilling, we identify scope for further progression in technicians through working with the operations team, working with customers and their open positions for further upskilling of identified technicians.

One-on-one discussions with technicians are arranged annually to identify motivation for further upskilling to Maintenance Technician and Troubleshooter level.

Andrew Simpson, a Troubleshooter with Boston Energy, has been with us for over five years having joined us as a Level 4 Technician, Maintenance Technician, having four years with SGRE prior. Andrew progressed in his career with us and has been a crucial individual in building our on-site ties as well as helping other technicians like himself to progress in their careers.

In an interview with us after he was promoted to Troubleshooter, Andrew was asked why he had chosen a career with Boston Energy, and he said, “I worked alongside Boston Energy technicians for a few years whilst I was a SGRE employee. During this time, I got an insight to how Boston works and realized that it was a lot better than I had initially thought. Joining Boston Energy was the obvious choice with what they were offering and their future aspirations.” Read Andrew’s story here.
